Unexpected things often happen – that's what you call it when you're introduced to two tennis world record holders one evening without any prior notice. This is exactly what happened during my Mallorca trip at the ROBINSON Club Cala Serena . There I had the pleasure of meeting the Soysal brothers, Tony and Erkan . Two truly tennis-mad globetrotters who, just a few weeks ago, set another tennis world record in the Schnalstal valley in South Tyrol. But more on that in a moment. In any case, I absolutely have to tell you about these two tennis stars.
Let's take a look back: Tony and Erkan are part of a Turkish tennis family. Their father, Ali, was brought to Cologne in 1978 as a tennis coach and brought his whole family with him. All five sons played tennis very ambitiously and won many titles. "Dad was always very strict; second place didn't count," Erkan and Tony told me. Nevertheless, you can feel the love and respect they have for their now deceased father.
A rigorous tennis academy, immense ambition, and hard work led Papa Ali to his first appearance on "Wetten dass...?" , when he set a new record by juggling 26 balls in one hand. His son Erkan followed in his footsteps a few years later, managing to catch a tennis ball served from 150 meters away and 50 meters high on "Wetten dass...?" with his racket. Another record was set in paragliding tennis : five rallies while suspended from paragliders at an altitude of 2,000 meters. And now, the latest world record was set by Erkan with Tony and Rene Schittko in the Schnalstal valley, where the two played tennis back and forth between gondolas at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Watching the video took my breath away...
"Why only such actions?" I asked the boys. They all follow the same motto: "Tennis is everywhere" – anyone can play tennis anywhere! But it can also be played normally on the tennis court.
Erkan runs the Tennis Base at the ROBINSON Club Jandia Playa in Fuerteventura, while his brother Tony has just launched his Tennis Base at the ROBINSON Club Cala Serena . Both share the same training philosophy, which uses the "Suggestive Meditative Teaching Method" both instruction and play. "We meet each tennis guest exactly where they are and help them develop their game – even in just a few days." And all of this is presented with plenty of visuals, a great atmosphere, and an infectious enthusiasm for tennis!
This naturally includes the relaxed get-together at the sports bar right after tennis, or socializing at the bar in the evening. Whether it's the cozy atmosphere of a mountain lodge with their own Soysal song and Tony's legendary 6-degree beer, or Erkan's parrot Rio, without whom "nothing works" on Fuerteventura – the two are definitely "crazy." But they radiate a passion for tennis that captivates everyone, especially in a relaxed holiday atmosphere.
Keep it up, guys – I'm really looking forward to your next crazy stunt!
And for those who would like to see all the world records of the Soysal brothers – voilà!
