The weather forecast for today was clear: rain from morning to night. But as the coaches from the Ljubicic Tennis Academy told us, there is not only a healing but also a microclimate here on the island. "As long as it's windy, it won't rain here," said head coach Luka, and he was right. It wasn't a sunny, warm day, but it stayed dry until the end of training in the afternoon. This meant the kids were able to complete their planned training program outdoors. Consistency was the topic for coach Mario Visek this morning. I had the opportunity to have a hotel talk with Ivanka Ajlec , the general manager of Vitality Hotel Punta , our beautiful camp hotel. You can read what else was going on in part four of our camp diaries.
After yesterday's camp schedule, it was clear that Tom could sleep in longer today. So we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious dinner and then had a lovely time in the bar. Training didn't start until 9.30am today with an hour of fitness. Afterwards we went onto the pitch at 10.30 a.m. together with Vallabhadas, Aston and coach Mario Vistek. Two players on one side, a single player on the other. And then there were various baseline exercises and later also volley exercises. Always a certain number of balls where the individual player always had to run left-right. The goal was to play the balls cleanly into the field despite all the running. “Consistency” echoed over and over again across the square. The boys were panting heavily, but were inspired by Mario's motivating words and ran, hit, ran, hit... Even though their legs were visibly heavier, the boys got the last bit out of themselves.
While Tom enjoyed his lunch break, the rest of the family was also doing sports: Dad Matthias was in the gym like every day. Today Jan and I put on jogging shoes instead of tennis shoes and walked along the waterfront towards Mali Lošinj. A beautiful route along smaller bays and fragrant bushes, flowers and trees. Running is really fun!
At 2:30 p.m. Tom continued his warm-up on the Track & Field track before moving on to the second tennis session from 3 - 4:30 p.m. Tom was assigned to Coach Darko with Vallabhadas. Play through everything again and then continue with match training. Anything but easy when the wind increases. I thought it was great that Darko constantly gave the boys tactical tips on the points being played. Here you can really soak up tennis knowledge every minute. The forecast rain started just in time for the end of training. But the last fitness session took place in the gym. As on the previous days, there was again a varied mix of strength, stability and stretching exercises. Everything is well dosed so that muscle soreness is kept to a minimum.
This morning I was able to interview Ivanka Ajlec in Hotel Talk. Iwanka has recently become General Manager here at the Vitality Hotel Punta and is an absolute power woman. The Slovenian-born woman, who grew up in Germany and has traveled a lot in the international hotel industry, tackles her job here at the hotel with full enthusiasm. With lots of ideas and always an open ear for the concerns of guests and employees. Iwanka can be seen at any time in the hotel, she always looks after everything and radiates enormous calm and serenity. And that also extends to the entire staff here, who are always very friendly and warm.
She is proud of her hotel and the many special features that the hotel offers here on the beautiful island, especially to us TennisTraveller . But it's best to just listen to our hotel talk and let yourself be taken to Vitality Island:
