With KING RICHARD, Will Smith returns to big drama after his successes in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS and ALI. Under the direction of Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men), he not only took on the role of Richard Williams in KING RICHARD, but is also a producer with his company Westbrook. Saniyya Sidney (Hidden Figures) takes on the role of Venus Williams, Demi Singleton (“Godfather of Harlem”) plays her younger sister Serena. Aunjanue Ellis (Beale Street) stars as Williams' wife and mother of the two. Tony Goldwyn (The Divergent) portrays the first coach Paul Cohen. Jon Bernthal (Le Mans 66 – Against Every Chance) embodies the legendary tennis coach Rick Macci. The screenplay was written by Zach Baylin and is based on Richard Williams' autobiography Black and White.
For his performance in KING RICHARD, Will Smith received, among others, the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar for “Best Actor”. The film was honored with 6 Oscar nominations.
KING RICHARD was produced by Tim White and Trevor White from Star Thrower Entertainment and by Will Smith with his company Westbrook. Isha Price, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Adam Merims, Lynn Harris, Allan Mandelbaum, Jon Mone and Peter Dodd serve as executive producers. The behind-the-scenes creative team also includes Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood), designers Wynn Thomas (Hidden Figures) and William Arnold (The Hate U Give), Oscar-nominated editor Pamela Martin ( The Fighter) and twice Oscar-nominated costume designer Sharen Davis (Dreamgirls, Ray). The music was written by Oscar-nominated composer Kris Bowers.
