Arrive, enjoy the view of the lake and the wonderful mountain panorama of the Karawanken from the historic bathhouse and switch off IMMEDIATELY. That's exactly how I felt when I arrived Werzers Hotel Resort Pörtschach Let me take you to Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia in my Travel Scout report. A tennis trip to Austria that was active, varied, extremely relaxing and enjoyable.
So come along to the “front row, foot-free” - to the tennis hotel Werzers Hotel Resort Pörtschach.
The 4-star superior hotel is located directly on Lake Wörthersee. Viewed from the outside, the traditional tennis hotel looks a bit “boxy”, but when you drive up to the reception you will find a very modern, stylish ambience. I was immediately impressed not only by the lobby with the hotel bar, which was completely modernized in 2022 and furnished in a very chic, stylish lounge-like manner, but also by the modern and generously furnished rooms. Although I had a room on the “land side”, I could overlook both the lake and the large Werzers tennis arena from my balcony. A view that every TennisTraveller loves!
After a short walk along the lake promenade, I was looking forward to a cool drink to complement my short tennis vacation. So off to the historic bathhouse, which is even built over the lake. You can't be any closer to Lake Wörthersee. “First row without walking” is the hotel motto. And this is particularly true in the bathhouse in question, which was built in 1895 and is now a listed building. After I arrived, I went straight to the restaurant in the bathhouse, where you can dine à la carte with toques in the evening. During the day there are delicious smaller dishes. With a cool drink and the fabulous panoramic view as already described, the short tennis vacation got off to a great start in the beautiful sunshine.
Afterwards we briefly explored the tennis facility right next to the hotel. The Werzers Tennis Arena is certainly one of the most famous tennis facilities in all of Austria. Davis Cup games have been played here several times. The play-off game against relegation between Austria and Pakistan is expected to take place in September in the tennis arena in Pörtschach. The facility also hosts numerous ATP and ITF active and senior tournaments every year. The international senior championships, which take place annually in the summer, are particularly well-known among tennis players.
Tennis has a long tradition here, as the hotel founder Anna Werzer was an enthusiastic and ambitious tennis player who could often be found on the red ash next to the hotel well into her old age. The first international tennis tournament was held on the facility as early as 1896. In the 1930s, even Duke Edward of Windsor played on the red ash and was thrilled by the proximity of the tennis courts to the hotel.
The tennis arena has a total of 10 clay courts as well as a center court with an impressive grandstand. And the whole thing is right next to the hotel and also a stone's throw from Lake Wörthersee. The space is rounded off by a 3-court tennis hall, which offers an ideal alternative in winter or in bad weather. Training options are available through external trainers, with whom individual tennis camps can be booked in addition to individual lessons.
If you don't want to chase the yellow felt ball but rather the smaller rubber ball, you can do so on the two squash courts in the tennis hall. A bright fitness room with modern cardio and strength equipment rounds off the training program perfectly. Otherwise, the hotel offers a variety of sports opportunities all year round. Hiking, cycling, jogging right on the lake, golf courses and of course a wide range of water sports activities in summer. A wonderful excursion destination, for example, is the Pyramidenkogel, which you can easily hike from the other side of the lake. The reward is a wonderful panoramic view.
After the tennis and sports program, I regularly made myself comfortable in the See-Spa. The sauna and wellness area is located partly in the hotel and partly in the historic bathhouse. For all sauna lovers, this historic sauna area is simply the ultimate. Even though the two saunas are small, you have a dream view of the lake from the glass-enclosed sauna. After the sauna, go directly to the lake to cool off – what could be nicer? An alternative is the outdoor pool, which floats directly above the lake. This makes regeneration easy.
If you want to regenerate even faster, you can do so in the new cryo suite at minus 110 degrees. The demand for this special treatment is high, so unfortunately I couldn't get a suitable appointment. But the frosty experience will definitely be on my must-do list next time I visit.
An absolute highlight at the Werzers Hotel Resort Pörtschach is definitely the food. Even in the morning I had a hard time making a decision in the spacious breakfast area, the selection of mueslis, yoghurts, rolls, fresh egg dishes and much more is so large and varied. Particularly noteworthy is the culinary experience in the evening as part of the gourmet half board. Every evening the kitchen team surprised everyone both visually and tastefully with a 5-course menu of a very high standard. Added to this was the beautiful ambience in the lakeside restaurant with its huge panoramic glass fronts. Even in cooler temperatures you had the feeling of sitting by the lake.
Unfortunately, the short vacation at Lake Wörthersee ended far too quickly. Aside from the tennis court, there was so much more to discover in the region. But this will definitely be done on the next visit. Because there is one thing I will definitely enjoy in warmer temperatures: a sundowner on a warm summer evening at Anna W., the largest gin bar on Lake Wörthersee. With the fantastic view of Lake Wörthersee.
