The new year started off very special for the tennis-loving twin girls Alina and Marisa: Alina, or rather her dad Mirko, won the New Year's camp at the PMTR Tennis Academy in Mülheim an der Ruhr . And so the tennis family, all four of them, drove to the Ruhr area on New Year's Day. Mirko wrote us a great travel report - we are very happy about that. And of course we are most pleased that the family had wonderful days of tennis at the PMTR and the B&B-Hotel Mülheim ! But it's best to read for yourself:
From Swabia to the tennis camp in the Ruhr area
In the early afternoon of New Year's Day we set off towards Mülheim an der Ruhr and, apart from a little traffic jam in Baden-Württemberg, we got through well and arrived at the hotel around 7 p.m. Check-in at the B&B Hotel Mülheim was very friendly and we were able to move into our two double rooms on the 4th floor quite quickly. The hotel also has family rooms if desired.
The next morning the tennis camp was supposed to start at 8:15 a.m. So a quick, proper breakfast with sausage, cheese and jam, fresh rolls, some eggs and yoghurt to fortify you. The buffet includes a larger selection with breads, fruit salad, fruit juices and of course coffee. Then grabbed the tennis bag that was packed the evening before and off to PMTR. The travel time between the hotel and the training ground is just under 10 minutes.
A really great tennis facility - both indoors and outdoors
A very large facility awaits athletes on site with 16 outdoor courts (13 clay courts, 3 hard courts) including a ball wall. There is a hockey club in the immediate vicinity, whose artificial turf is used by PMTR for athletic training. The building houses, among other things, a fitness and wellness club as well as a restaurant (more on that later). The tennis hall is modern and has 4 carpet courts. The entire area is located directly on the Ruhr, and a beautiful footpath along the river invites you to take a walk or run.
In addition to coaching lessons, tournament coaching and camps, PMTR also offers tennis shoes and clothing, a stringing service, racket advice and sports nutrition in its shop.
Everyday camp life begins with clear announcements - that's a good thing!
Mr. Schumann welcomed the participants and their parents, introduced the coaching team, announced the motto of the four-day camp (movement play situations) and announced the group division as well as the rough daily routine for the four-day camp. The following points were important to him: Punctuality! Pack or carry your own tennis bag and eat healthy! Especially without soft drinks (better mineral water or apple spritzer). He also asked the participants to approach the assigned trainers directly if there were important topics or points of criticism in order to find a solution. Of course, Mr. Schumann himself is also available as a contact person if necessary. During our stay he also asked us directly how the children and we liked it.
After the speech and a joint warm-up program, Alina and Marisa immediately began hitting training with their different groups and trainers Birgit “Ro(b)be” and Romanus (the tennis trainers were supplemented by Dominic for other participants). Other groups went outside for the first athletic session with Alex and Max. In the second round in the morning, the groups changed terrain before the children had lunch together in the FAIR1 HEIM. The catering industry attaches great importance to “organic food” and organic food from the region and provides the children with exemplary care. You can also get local advice on conscious and sustainable food and lifestyle. As parents, we ate there twice and praised the team for the quality.
Cool Fair1heim with delicious food and a nice atmosphere
The Ruhr area really has a high recreational value - and not just on the tennis court
While Alina took part in the tennis and athletics sessions in the afternoon, Marisa wanted to explore the area with us. Mr. Schumann kindly sent us some tips during the preliminary discussion. These include the Camera Obscura , the Saarner shopping street and the Rhine-Ruhr Center in Mülheim or the huge Centro in Oberhausen. We also went to the Zollverein mine in Essen. There is an outdoor ice skating rink there during the holidays, which was very well attended that day, despite the rainy weather.

Duisburg offers a great zoo, the Landschaftspark Nord and Tiger & Turtle , a walk-in roller coaster sculpture. Illuminated at night a real experience with a great view.
The walk-on roller coaster in the Tiger&Turtle park is simply brilliant
So the time was quite entertaining for us parents and flew by.
Two happy and satisfied tennis girls
When asked about their impressions of the camp, our daughters unanimously said “we had a lot of fun training with the other children” and “it was cool to practice other sports such as baseball in addition to different game situations in tennis”.
Where might there be opportunities for improvement? There is an idle period of half an hour between the athletic and tennis units. Some children occupied themselves with smartphones or game consoles. For example, Alina would rather “match” or practice serves and returns....
Many thanks to Susanne from TennisTraveller and Claus Schumann and of course to the coaching team for the great four days. We all had a lot of fun!
