Relaxed tennis camp start to get used to the clay court
Day 1 at the tennis camp with theEuropean Tennis Academy in Naturns in South Tyrol. At the start of training the sun actually shone, but the temperatures weren't really spring-like. But that didn't dampen the good mood of the three motivated tennis kids at the start of the tennis camp.
Alex greeted the kids and we started with a relaxed thumping in the small field. As soon as you hit from the baseline, two so-called focus points set: exhaling while hitting and loosely following through with the hit into the final position . The children should concentrate on these two focal points from now on.
This concentrated work on the focus points was varied again and again in the following exercises: after each shot, the children had to rate themselves on a scale of 1-5 to where they had easily swung their shot. 5 was up to final position.
Then long rallies were played - now the children said "Now" at the start of the backswing - so the focus was on an early backswing and ultimately a good hitting position.
In the last part of the training, the children practiced serving - always a tricky thing outdoors. So coach Alex set a new focus point: no ball should hit the net , i.e. always hit with a nice kick.
This worked well quite quickly, so that at the end of the training the children were able to play their first points against each other. And it all looked pretty good!
With focus points for increased concentration
It was something new for the children to work with these focus points. However, these focus points are the fundamental part of the European Tennis Academy's Mental Match Play training method . Paying more attention to your own shots is an interesting concept, especially for children.
I'm excited to see how the children can implement and internalize this self-coaching method in the next few days.
