At Easter we stopped off in Carinthia on the way to Croatia and stayed two nights at the Parkhotel Pörtschach on the beautiful Lake Wörthersee. The traditional hotel, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, is one of THE hotel institutions on Lake Wörthersee. In contrast to many other hotels, the four-star superior hotel has managed to combine the retro flair of the 1960s with very modern elements. Today the hotel offers a very special ambience, which absolutely thrilled us over the two days. Added to this is the unique peninsular location with the large hotel park right on the lake . You can read what we experienced in and around the hotel in my travel report.
Come along to the Parkhotel Pörtschach on Lake Wörthersee!
On Maundy Thursday my family and I headed towards Carinthia, where we wanted to make a short stopover on our way to Croatia. So what could be better than choosing one of our wonderful Carinthian tennis hotels? The choice fell on the four-star superior Parkhotel Pörtschach , which we already knew from the outside from a visit to Lake Wörthersee last year. From the outside, the Park Hotel is designed in the typical architectural style of the 1960s : a rather massive-looking high-rise complex, which turned out to be no longer so massive when we drove up.
The 60s retro style is evident right from the entrance doors and the door heading. When you enter the huge lobby, the style continues, with lots of modern elements blending in wonderfully. The oversized modern chandelier impresses in combination with the nostalgic-looking reception.
Speaking of reception: we were warmly welcomed and immediately took the elevator to our family suite . And we really loved the family suite: two separate bedrooms, two separate bathrooms and two balconies - one of which overlooks the three tennis courts , simply perfect for us TennisTraveller ! And the hotel slogan "The best location" really doesn't promise too much: from the rooms you can see from a "bird's eye view" how unique the hotel is located on the peninsula on Lake Wörthersee.
In sunshine, but with unusually cool temperatures for the time of year, we explored the waterfront promenade, where there are many cafes and bars, and then took a walk around the hotel. There was a lot of work on the beautifully located tennis courts. Unfortunately, the pitches were not yet playable as there was always night frost in the previous days. It's a shame, but nobody could do anything about the cool weather at Easter this year...
So after the walk we went to the swimming pool or the wellness area . Our boys had a lot of fun in the pool and were able to let off steam there with a view of Lake Wörthersee. We enjoyed the peace and quiet in the small but beautifully designed sauna area.
Feeling well rested, we decided to eat at the hotel in the evening. We had “only” booked in with an overnight stay/breakfast. However, a subsequent booking for the evening was very easy. We got a nice table right next to the large panoramic windows of the main restaurant, so that we could enjoy the incredibly beautiful lake view while eating. The 6-course menu was very tasty and the service was pleasantly relaxed and courteous. So we enjoyed the menu to the fullest and had a wonderful start to our holiday.
The next day started with a detailed breakfast. The breakfast buffet leaves absolutely nothing to be desired - everything an athlete's heart desires is there. Well fortified, we decided to go for a hike since the tennis courts weren't open yet. With a hiking tip from reception, we set off to the Karawankenblick, onto the Pirkkogel, descended to Krumpendorf and then along the lake back to Pörtschach. A tour in the best weather, albeit quite cool temperatures again. But the view was simply wonderful and so was the movement.
We rewarded ourselves with an apple strudel before heading back to the wellness area to relax. Despite the hotel being fully booked, it was never overcrowded, nor was the pool.
For dinner that evening we decided to visit a restaurant in the area. A nice change, especially since there are many options within walking distance. If you don't want to eat in the hotel every evening, you'll find something for every taste here.
Unfortunately, the next morning we had to say goodbye again as our TennisTraveller trip continued to Croatia. Despite the shortness of our stay, we were really impressed by the traditional Parkhotel Pörtschach . The unique peninsula location in particular is an absolute dream. From almost every side you have the impression that you could jump into the lake. The adjacent park is wonderful for strolling or jogging in the morning.
We will definitely be back, just to play on the wonderfully located tennis courts. The lake to the left and right, the tennis courts in between. Playing must be simply brilliant! And of course some of the absolute highlights of the hotel such as the terraces, the seaside resort and much more will round off a tennis holiday in summer temperatures.
That's the tennis family's conclusion: we'll be back!
