Nicolas started playing tennis at the age of six and was soon discovered as a talent. In 1995 he won the Grand Slam tournaments Australian Open and US Open on the junior tour and was also in the semi-finals at the French Open in Paris and in the final of the Wimbledon junior competition.
He made the leap to the top of the world in 1999 when he took part in four finals on the professional tour and won two of them, so that he was among the top ten players in the world for the first time. Nicola's greatest success in his tennis career was winning the silver medal in doubles at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He has also won nine tournaments on the ATP World Tour so far. He is one of the four most successful German tennis players in the Open Era.
