Travel scout Jens reports from the autumn tennis camp at the PMTR Tennis Academy in Mülheim
In our 2022 Advent calendar we had hidden a 4-day tennis camp at the PMTR Tennis Academy in Mülheim an der Ruhr behind door number 20. Jens was chosen as the lucky winner and traveled to the tennis academy in the Ruhr area in October as an autumn camp travel scout . Perfect for the start of the indoor season. Jens tells us exactly what everyday camp life at PMTR looked like in his detailed camp report. Like every report from our travel scouts, Jens' report is more than happy to publish it. His report is very special, because as a player "of advanced tennis age (50+)", Jens had a lot of fun training with the young people at the professional camp. He took on the challenge, gave it his all and came away with a consistently positive “camp adventure” conclusion. Thank you Jens for your feedback and all the best and good luck!
And from now on we'll let Jens have his say
"If someone - especially at an advanced tennis age (50+) - is looking for a real challenge for their playing and physical performance, then I can only recommend the “professional camp” for “competitive players” at the PMTR Tennis Academy in Mülheim ad Ruhr When I arrived I noticed that it was primarily an autumn holiday camp for students in North Rhine-Westphalia, because I was in a group of 3x U20s at the professional camp - but that was exactly the challenge I was looking for 😊
Alternatively, there would have been 3 other camps for teenagers and an adult group for intermediate levels that completed a similar program at the same time. The indoor facility with the 2 rebound ace and 2 carpet courts in Mülheim is well maintained and has a well-equipped “fitness studio” hidden behind a curtain at the end of court 1.
On each of the four days there was a one-hour “warm-up program” with the athletic trainer Alex Schneider, although warm-up is an understatement because I could have taken a good hour break afterwards. Alex is a professional personal trainer and really pays attention to the right mix of cardio, mobilization and strength exercises. Even for someone who practices a little mobilization and strength at home every day, the program was challenging. But the youth at PMTR already knew all of this because they do it regularly alongside tennis training - something I haven't seen in this form at many tennis schools. Here I was able to pick up lots of new tips for my future athletic training at home!
Afterwards we went - of course without a break - to Romanus Ostermann for 1.5 hours of intensive tennis training with all basic strokes and many forms of play. I've never practiced as many serves as I did these days. In the afternoon there was another shorter warm-up program with Alex and then 2 hours of tennis with Bjaerne. At the end we each stretched for 15-20 minutes, which is not a given in many training camps, but it actually should be! All the PMTR trainers that I got to know were professional, had good forms of exercise and didactically important tips, which I will try to implement better in the future.
Only the lunch snack in the adjoining restaurant was, in my opinion, not the right, balanced sports food (pizza, potato wedges with meatballs, 2x pasta with thin sauce), which I would have liked, but of course the tennis school can do that few.
My conclusion:
All in all, I can only say that the further journey was completely worth it for this “camp adventure” and that I physically reached my limits with this daily program. There is no better preparation for the winter indoor round! I can highly recommend the PMTR team!"
