Tennis & Golf - this was the motto of the TennisTraveller exclusive camp in the Aktivhotel Marko on Lake Klopein in Carinthia from October 2nd - 6th, 2024 . The fact that both the topic and the destination met with great interest was also demonstrated by the internationality of the participants. These came from Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Also a sign that our camp philosophy of constantly changing camp focuses and camp destinations is hitting the mark. Even though the weather gods in Carinthia were really not kind to us, we had a very varied time with lots of tennis, golf, other activities and great conversations. And the international, diverse tennis travel group turned out to be a more than fun team that defied the bad weather with good spirits and lots of humor! And all of this in a host hotel where we felt really comfortable. You can find out what it looked like during the five days of camp and what we experienced in our travel report here. The hotel, the Klopeiner See Tennis School and I were particularly happy about the excellent participant feedback!
Early arrival to Aktivhotel Marko in St. Kanzian on Lake Klopein
My trip to Lake Klopein started on October 1st, as I still had to organize a few things on site. In the most beautiful late summer weather, I drove the scenic route from Stuttgart towards St. Kanzian on Lake Klopein, where I was welcomed by summery 23 degrees and the warm Bettina at the reception.
What was particularly nice was that some participants thought the same as me and arrived a day earlier. So we had a pre-opening with a smaller group, so to speak, where it became clear: these are going to be fun days!
Get together with international flair - a successful start to the camp
On the official start day of the camp, I quickly distributed all the welcome bags for the participants, which, in addition to our TennisTraveller drinking bottle, contained various products from the Kirschbaum : test strings, overgrips, sweatbands, dampeners and much more. All products that were immediately used during the camp days. Each participant also received a large, wonderfully blue beach towel from Kärnten Werbe as a gift! At this point, many thanks to both sponsors!
In the evening we met for a get-together with a champagne reception . For me it's always a more than exciting situation when the participants get to know each other. Not only different nationalities, but also very different age groups from 30 to mid-60 were represented. But as always, there was a good vibe through the shared passion for tennis. The first dinner together at the long table with a delicious four-course menu and the subsequent conclusion at the bar did everything to ensure that everyone was looking forward to the first day of camp despite the bad weather forecast.
Off to the hall - it rains and rains and rains.......
Jörg from the Klopeiner See Tennis School we already had a plan B ready for this. Instead of playing on the hotel's seven sand courts, the next morning in the pouring rain we went by car convoy to the tennis hall in Bad Eisenkappel, the southernmost town in Carinthia. In the three-field hall, head coach Jörg explained the training content of the first day: basic strokes in the morning, volleys in the afternoon. We also had to change the originally planned training division and schedule due to the adverse circumstances and the training in the hall. But our participants were flexible - we all made the best of it. With unbroken motivation, we trained for two hours in the morning, then took a short break with a snack from the hotel and then went full throttle for another hour. Satisfied and yet a little tired, we went back to the hotel in Kovvoi.
Some of the participants didn't miss the training session with Willi, . Because of Stretch & Relax: Jack of all trades Willi had a slightly different opinion than us when it came to stretching and relaxing. With a breathtaking commitment and motivation to the core, he made us sweat profusely. None of us will soon forget the full-body training with included mental training. And the training provided plenty to talk about throughout the evening!!
Rain, cold and still a good atmosphere on the tennis and golf courses
Unfortunately, the weather remained unchanged on camp day two: constant rain and cold. The sand courts resembled a lake landscape. So after the delicious breakfast we went back to Bad Eisenkappel. Like the day before, we trained diligently on technique and tactics - unfortunately again in the hall.
On day three of camp the time had finally come: we were actually able to do the morning session outdoors. Although the temperatures were anything but inviting, Jörg and I warmed up the participants plenty. a.
After the lunch snack at the hotel, the tennis ball was swapped for the golf ball. golf taster course was on the program. Putting, chipping, teeing off - our golf pro explained the basics perfectly and - oh wonder - it was actually dry!
Unfortunately, I had to go to the accident hospital in Klagenfurt with one of the participants in the afternoon because he was "knuckled" and had suffered a double torn ligament. What bad luck! But despite all the adversities, Thorsten was still in good spirits and returned on crutches to the camp group he had become very fond of. Last evening was once again very fun!
On Sunday, our last day of camp, there was a training session in the morning where we practiced and consolidated everything we had learned in various forms of play outdoors. At 12 p.m. there was the official farewell to our head coach Jörg. And then most of the participants made their way home in what was now bright sunshine and rapidly rising temperatures. Some participants had booked a vacation extension. A great decision as it turned out, as the weather was great from Monday onwards!
Just great feedback
So that we could find out in detail how our camp participants experienced the camp, they were given an opportunity to give feedback after the camp along with a nice selection of photos. The conclusion was excellent, which of course made me very happy!
My big thanks go to Jörg from the Klopeiner See Tennis School, Willi from Willfit and especially Seppi, the boss of the house, Bettina, who is simply a heart and the entire service team at Aktivhotel s Marko! We had a great time with you and nobody can do anything about the weather 😉
